"Kill This Hippie Shit"

The “target” of Michael Phelan’s tie-dye painting in Just Kick It Till It Breaks is twofold—hippies and high modernism. It’s a hilarious picture of everything political revolutionaries and avant-garde artists mock: pacifist, stoner lifestyles and Greenbergian formalism. I don’t think the Beatles ever wore tie-dye. Or Lou Reed. Or the Red Army Faction and the Angry Brigade.
